JUNE 2001
A PUBLICATION OF CONCERNED FRIENDS OF WBAI

VICTORIES! KEY BOARD
HIJACKERS RESIGN!

Keep up the pressure until they all leave!

On June 13, the free-Pacifica movement won its greatest victories yet when Pacifica National Board Chair David Acosta and Board member Karolyn van Putten resigned. Privately they reported weariness with the constant listener pressure campaign. Acosta was a key player in the shutdown of Berkeley station KPFA, the coup at WBAI and the attacks on “Democracy Now!” Van Putten supported the repression. With their departure—following the May 14th resignation of Board Treasurer Michael Palmer—the Board hijackers are on the run. Their majority (over the dissidents) has narrowed to 7-5.

These victories are a tribute to the determined struggle by thousands nationally on multiple fronts—direct actions, rallies, boycotts, lawsuits, teach-ins, email campaign, phone-ins, media work, producers' defiance and education, local board elections and other tactics—for years, but especially since December.

We can't let down our guard until ALL the hijackers have left, and then we have the hard work of reconstructing a progressive, democratic network. Check our hotline 800-825- 0055 and web site www.wbaiaction.org to learn how you can help win the battle to reclaim Pacifica as a people's radio network.
